Unity Grammar College’s first year of operation was 2008 with an initial population that peaked at 196 K – 5 primary students spread over 8 classes with 8 full-time classroom teachers and 3 part-time support staff. Over the next 8 years, the school expanded to a K – 12 school with its first group of 10 HSC students in 2014. The school’s primary school student population in 2016 is about 500 students. In 2017 the primary school will consist of 21 classes: 3 classes in each grade from K-6. Based on 2016 student population data, it is anticipated that each class will average 25 students.
In 2014, the school appointed its first numeracy instructional leader who collaborated with teachers to create a framework for lesson delivery. Attention was given to the numeracy continuum as a foundation for collegial dialogue.
Over the years, pedagogical practices have evolved and our work with expert numeracy consultant, Anita Chin, served to refine and enhance teachers’ understanding of the syllabus and content knowledge. In addition, teachers’ pedagogical instruction, monitoring student performance and effective use of targeted resources became a focal point of discussions and a testament to the work done under her guidance.
